What should a car smell like? What the experts say at imat’s workshop

Vehicle interior odor and emissions (VIAQ) are a much discussed topic in the automotive industry. On the one hand, international standards and regional regulations must be adhered to, on the other hand, the human factor plays a major role, especially in the case of odors. How are pollutants banned from the car and how do you create an acceptable, or even pleasant smell? International experts will be discussing this in Shanghai on 26 and 27 July 2018 at the two-day workshop "Emissions and Odor (VIAQ)".

Again, invited by imat-uve, emission and odor experts from the fields of quality assurance and material development meet. In addition to the presentations by renowned VIAQ specialists (OEM and suppliers) from the automotive industry, there will be an accompanying exhibition for the first time this year. During the conference, participants will be able to find out about innovations in test equipment from Gerstel, Markes International and GAS.

An introduction to vehicle odor from the customer perspective was provided by Peng Jiang and Dominik Hilboll (J.D. Power China / Europe). Matthias Büsselmann from imat-uve explained the basics of emission and odor test methods. Dr. Xiaojian Li (CATARC) reported about an odor study in vehicle interiors. Subsequently, Thomas Wortelmann of the test instrument manufacturer GAS presented customized solutions for the trace determination of volatile substances with a gas chromatography ion mobility spectrometer (GC-IMS).

Dr. Caroline Widdowson (Markes International) spoke about new solutions for VOC and SVOC sampling and analysis of vehicle interior materials. Dr. Roland Freudenmann and Dongdan Cai from Continental AG, Benecke-Hornschuh Surface Group presented low-emission surfaces. Dr. Yadong Wang, syft technologies, explained the procedure SIFT-MS for the analysis of emissions and imat-uve's emission expert Dr. Michael Holzwarth talked about the basics of odor testing methods. Leilei Yuan from BAIC Motors concluded the first day with his talk on measures to improve the odor quality inside the vehicle.
