Milestone for the textile circular economy

imat-uve Sep 3, 2021 1 min read

At the successful conclusion of a German-Dutch research project on the recycling of waste textiles from mixed fibers, the partner consortium shared the promising results with the public on September 2. Integrated into the "Fibers unsorted" exhibition of the DesignLab envisions at the TextilTechnikum Mönchengladbach, it was possible for the first time to tangibly demonstrate how new high-tech yarns and textiles can be made from old clothes. In front of numerous visitors, Michael Wolf and Hans Peter Schlegelmilch from imat-uve presented the development steps and application examples. The focus was also on the eco-balance and resource savings in terms of CO2 and water.
Representatives of regional politics, education and institutions, such as universities and funding organizations, as well as companies from the automotive industry gathered at the event to learn about the technological innovation. Representatives of the European funding program Interreg Deutschland-Nederland and the Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier praised the project as an example of how funding can lead to real innovations and significantly promote structural change in the border region.
The following step will now be to develop various applications on an industrial scale with the corresponding producers and processors. Be it technical textiles or furniture and clothing, there are no limits here. There are already promising approaches from the automotive interior sector for seat fabrics and carpeting.

As a visible proof of possibility, the Dutch company Pour Product presented the prototype of a bag made of the recycled material, which will be available soon.
imat-uve thanks the project partners C2C ExpoLab, FBBasic, Stichting Texperium and Trützschler Spinning for the fruitful cooperation.

The exhibition is open to all interested parties until October 10, 2021. Afterwards, the exhibits will be shown at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (NL).
